Brett Gurewitz’s 1994 Gibson Les Paul Classic
You know this guitar. If you’ve ever listened to the music of Bad Religion or if you saw them live during the mid 90s up the time when Brett chose to stop performing live you’ve seen him play this guitar. Brett bought this guitar new and it continues to serve as one of his primary Les Pauls for writing and recording to this very day.
As one might expect, the Les Paul shows the signs of being loved for a lifetime of play and tour duty. It was in good shape but was ready for a fret level and dress, along with a general setup.
Brett asked me to change out the Dimarzio Super Distortion in the bridge position for an Arcane INC. 1959 Triple Clone, which he already had ready to go. It was my recommendation to swap out the neck pickup as well to an Alnico type pickup with a similar tone profile, output range and nickel cover to better match and complement the sonic and visual esthetics. Brett agreed and I went to my local guitar shop and found a Gibson ’57 Classic, a model I’ve had a lot of success with, as several of my personal Gibson guitars has these pickups.
The result was an awesome playing and sounding Les Paul that Brett was super stoked about! Brett instantly felt and heard the improvements in playability and sound, which of course made me very happy!
